SANTA CLARA, CA -- August 25, 1997 -- Database Excelleration Systems, Inc. (DES), the leading developer and manufacturer of intelligent solid-state storage systems, announced today that it will release a new model of its DES Database Excellerator™ to support Hewlett-Packard's Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) technology.  DES' current Fast Wide SCSI-based Database Excellerator product is the fastest persistent storage device available for UNIX & NT platforms.  The new DES FC-AL product will further augment storage performance throughput and greatly reduce processing times by taking full advantage of FC-AL's faster transfer of data to and from the server.  DES accelerator products are specifically designed to address the enormous demands placed on I/O subsystems by high-performance applications.  By integrating a DES Database Excellerator with an FC-AL connection, DES' customers will be able to take full advantage of the increased performance provided by Fibre Channel's 100MB bandwidth, as well as support for four times as many devices per channel.

    In May, Database Excelleration Systems and Hewlett-Packard announced that HP would resell DES products.  This announcement builds on the companies' commitment to offer the best solutions to customers that require mainframe-level performance in client/server systems.  "DES and Hewlett-Packard products work extremely well together.  By supporting HP's FC-AL technology, DES is once again demonstrating its commitment to provide customers with the fastest solution available," said Jim Pinsky, Director of Business Alliances for DES.
 
    Designed to support the HP FC-AL enterprise environment, the new DES FC-AL connectivity will integrate flawlessly with the HP Series 9000 K-class and T-600 Enterprise Servers and enterprise parallel clusters running HP-UX.  Integration of a FC-AL DES Database Excellerator will allow DES customers to take full advantage of Fibre Channel 100MB bandwidth, locate storage devices up to 10 kilometers apart and support four times as many devices per channel.  By fully supporting HP's Fibre Channel specifications and connectivity, DES will use the tremendous speed of Fibre to further expand the performance of HP's servers.

The DES Solution
The DES family of Database Excellerator™ products combines patented solid-state memory enhanced with patented DES DirectAddressing™ firmware to dramatically increase the performance of relational database (RDBMS) applications.  When combined with DES' rugged backup system, they ensure absolute non-volatility and data integrity.  By moving key RDBMS "hot files," temporary work areas, transaction logs or indices onto a solid-state Database Excellerator -- instead of conventional mass storage -- DES customers experience immediate and dramatic application performance gains averaging 60% to 200%.  Database Excellerator systems extend the performance range of client/server RDBMS applications increasing throughput to and from the I/O subsystem.  Full bandwidth use of the I/O channel puts an end-to-CPU queue management, increasing the throughput of faster PA RISC processor-based systems such as the PA 8000 in the HP 9000.

    Currently, DES Excellerator systems connect to the server's SCSI bus, allowing for fast, easy installation.  DES Excellerator products are platform and software independent and run on all Hewlett-Packard Series 9000 computers, including the popular Models T, K and D.  DES products are also fully compatible with the HP NetServer NT Servers.

Availability
