"Storage subsystem performance is a critical component of database application performance," said Dan Kusnetzky, Director of International Data Corporation's (IDC) Unix and Client/Server Operating Environments Program. "The combination of HP's FC-AL Fibre Channel technology and DES' database accelerators would certainly improve the performance of any storage-bound database application at a very reasonable cost."
The DES Solution
The DES family of Database Excellerator™ products combines patented solid-state memory enhanced with patented DES DirectAddressing™ firmware to dramatically increase the performance of relational database (RDBMS) applications. When combined with DES' rugged backup system, they ensure absolute non-volatility and data integrity. By moving key RDBMS "hot files," temporary work areas, transaction logs or indices onto a solid-state Database Excellerator -- instead of conventional mass storage -- DES customers experience immediate and dramatic application performance gains averaging 60% to 200%. Database Excellerator systems extend the performance range of client/server RDBMS applications increasing throughput to and from the I/O subsystem. Full bandwidth use of the I/O channel puts an end-to-CPU queue management, increasing the throughput of faster PA RISC processor-based systems such as the PA 8000 in the HP 9000.
Currently, DES Excellerator systems connect to the server's SCSI bus, allowing for fast, easy installation. DES Excellerator products are platform and software independent and run on all Hewlett-Packard Series 9000 computers, including the popular Models T, K and D. DES products are also fully compatible with the HP NetServer NT Servers.
The new DES Database Excellerator is expected to be generally available in the latter half of the fourth quarter of 1997. Customers with installed DES products may leverage their investments with a liberal upgrade policy when moving to the new FC-AL Database Excellerator models. The new DES Fibre Channel products also will be sold and serviced by Hewlett Packard.
